KOCHI: The Confederation of Indian industry (CII), in association with its youth wing, Young Indians (Yi) jointly organised a convention for women leadership here on Friday.After inaugurating the convention, Leela Menon, editor of Janmabhumi daily, said that women have immense potential but they do not come out with it. "Women are groomed, right from childhood to be submissive and they will have the status of second class citizens only," she said. News of sexual abuse and crimes against women fill the newspapers everyday. Not even 10 per cent of the state Assembly or Parliament are represented by women, she said. Women are empowered when they are able to take a decision for themselves. Women need to identify, initiate and invigorate the potentials within themselves, she said.She encouraged more women to come into politics as it held the maximum potential to bring about mainstream changes. Quoting examples of Mamata Banerjee and Jayalalithaa she explained how women have been able to bring in great changes in society once they are given the opportunity.Anupama Arya, Yi national vice-chairman and director, Mobera systems Pvt Ltd, said women should not see themselves as a source of second income in the family but should work towards leaving a legacy.Sushama Sreekandath, chief operating officer, AVT Mc McCormick Ingredients Pvt Ltd, spoke about the importance of women developing the decision making competency. Taking the decision is the starting point and developing an internal locus of control where you believe you can change is crucial if women have to come forward.Lida Jacob, former chairperson, Commission for Right to Education Act, Kerala, spoke about the difficulties and challenges she had to face as a woman IAS officer. But having the courage to take the right decision at the right time made all the difference. CII Kerala chairman Jose Dominic promised to look into the issues faced by women at the workplace.
