KOCHI:The city wore a deserted look on the hartal day, observed to protest against the hike in petrol prices. Apart from a few private vehicles, buses and auto rickshaws kept off the road. Police were deployed in the city to avert any kind of untoward incidents throughout the day. According to City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar, police were deployed in every junction, and the rallies were conducted under strict surveillance. “The police were deployed everywhere in the city. Apart from some small protest rallies, no incidence of violence was reported in the city,” said Ajith Kumar. The LDF activists who conducted the protest rally at Vytilla, blocked the road for a while but the police rushed to the scene and pacified the protesters. In another incident, stones were pelted on a lorry in Palarivattom. The functioning of the High Court was also affected as lawyers couldn’t reach the court. Many cases were adjourned owing to low attendance of staff.LDF activists conducted protest rally from Menaka to High Court junction while BJP followers took out a rally at Kacheripaddi.
