Having got the chance to perform only ten operations in the past decade, the Society for Organ Retrieval and Transplantation - Cochin (SORT) is currently overwhelmed by the response it has been receiving after the report on ‘Organ donation’ appeared in ‘City Express’ on Thursday. Dr Ramesh Srinivasa Shenoy, general secretary, SORT said he has been receiving frequent calls from people expressing their wish to donate organs. “Frequent calls are something new. SORT received six to seven calls immediately after the report appeared,” he said.
Dr. Ramesh informed that one of the callers even volunteered for a live transplantation. "He wanted to know whether he could donate his organs like kidney and liver. But we had to refer him to super specialty hospitals as we do not undertake live organ transplantation.”
The SORT official further said that an organisation called Senior Citizen Forum contacted them to donate for the good cause. Ayyappan Pillai, president, Senior Citizen Forum, Desam, said, “This forum has about 35 members. A year ago, 16 of us donated our eyes. Five of us wanted to donate our other organs,” he said.
To make sure organ donors increase, the Senior Citizen Forum has been conducting awareness classes. “Our classes have been going on since three-and-a-half years,” he said. At the moment dead bodies are buried or cremated without thinking whether the organs in the body can be used to save people’s lives, he said. SORT can be contacted at 8891038377
