Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday ordered the establishment of 18 state-of-the-art warehouses and 50 cold storage facilities across the State. She also announced that a body to promote development of the food processing sector would be set up and ordered the release of the State government’s share of the body’s finances. A statement from the government said the warehouses and cold storage facilities were aimed at giving small and micro farmers the elbow room to negotiate favourable prices, instead of being forced to sell at low prices.
The 18 warehouses and 50 cold storage facilities would be built at a total cost of Rs 37.5 crore, the statement said.
The 18 warehouses would have a capacity of 2000 metric tonnes, and would be built at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore each, totalling Rs 21.6 crore.
The 50 cold storage facilities would have a capacity of 25 metric tonnes and would be built at a cost of Rs 31.8 lakh each, totalling Rs 15.9 crore.
Jayalalithaa also ordered steps to be taken to boost the food processing sector, by improving infrastructure and training entrepreneurs to increase output and meet national and international standards.She ordered the setting up of a body for the promotion of the food processing sector in line with the national body, and ordered the release of Rs 37.5 lakh, the State government’s share of the Rs 1.5 crore, towards its establishment.
