A 17-year-old girl died and another was injured in a road accident near Jagatpur here on Wednesday. The mishap sparked off protests and brought traffic on the busy NH-5 to a halt for several hours.
The victim, Ahalya Sethi, a student of the Laxmi Narayan Sahoo College at Jagatpur, was on her way home at Trilochanpur on a bicycle along with a friend, Rashmita Mallik, when the duo was hit by a speeding bus.
Police said, Ahalya was caught under the front wheels of the bus while Rashmita was thrown off to a distance. The seriously injured Rashmita has been shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital here.
The incident sparked protests, with students of the college and locals staging a demonstration demanding adequate compensation for the bereaved family. The blockade was lifted on the intervention and assurances of action by top officials including the DCP, Cuttack.
The bus has been seized and a case registered in the Jagatpur police station.
