New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India RM Lodha has cleared the elevation of senior advocate Uday Lalit as a Supreme Court judge along with the elevation of three Chief Justices of High Courts, including one woman judge.
Lalit has been practicing in the apex court since 1986. He has also worked with former Attorney-General Soli Sorabjee.
Lalit appeared various criminal cases like the one against Pune businessman Hasan Ali Khan who has been accused of money laundering. He also appeared for BJP President Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter cases.
The decision comes after former Solicitor General of India and senior lawyer Gopal Subramanium withdrew his candidature for appointment as a Supreme Court judge. In a letter Subramaniam alleged that there was a malicious campaign going on against him by the Central government to discredit him.
