Pondicherry: The Union Territory has created a record of sorts by issuing Electoral Photo Identity Cards to all voters spread over 30 Assembly constituencies.
More than 6.5 lakh voters residing in Pondicherry and its enclaves have been covered to reach the record, district collector and election officer G Theva Needhi Dhas said.
In the two-phased polling to the territorial assembly, Mahe and Yanam enclaves would go to polls on May 3, while Pondicherry and Karaikal on May 8.
Dhas said that if for some reason or the other the voters had misplaced or lost the cards they would be permitted to exercise franchise after comparing their details with the electors' photo rolls.
If there were any mismatch in the rolls, people could vote by presenting documents like bank pass book, driving licence, income tax pan card or passport, he added.
Referring to recent instances of road blockades and also disturbance to peace in Bahoor segment in Pondicherry, he said that the election authorities would take stern action against law-breakers.
