CHENNAI: The MBBS Selection Committee has been directed by the Madras High Court to complete admission of students under the government quota in all medical colleges, including private selffinancing colleges, well in advance before the cutoff date of Sept 30, every year.
Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar gave the direction while allowing two writ petitions from Sri Muthukumaran Educational Trust, running Sri Muthukumaran Medical College, Hospital and Research Institute in Mangadu, challenging the orders of the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi, and the Selection Committee. As eight candidates selected by the committee did not turn up before 5 pm on September 30 last year due to unavoidable reasons, the college filled up the seats under the lapsed seats category. Karthika of Thanjavur was one among the students, who could not reach the college before 5 pm. due to an accident enroute. She reached the college at 5.45 pm, but the management refused admission to her.
