BANGALORE: Protesting the “misrule” of the BJP state government, the Congress launched a new agitation, Janaandholana on Thursday, urging the public to ensure its ouster.Addressing a well-attended public meeting organised jointly by the Bangalore City and the Bangalore Urban district Congress committees here, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah asserted that “factionalism within the BJP has reduced governance in the state to nil”. He lambasted the government for its failure to tackle the prevailing drought in over 123 taluks. The recent murder of the KAS officer S P Mahantesh did not escape the Congress leader’s attention as he said: “The officer’s murder in the high-security zone is indicative of the collapse of law and order.” He accused the ruling establishment of pressuring the police on the handling of sensitive cases.Siddaramaiah added that the Congress’ Bangalore-Bellary padayatra demanding a CBI inquiry into illegal mining and looting of natural resources by the government fructified with the Supreme Court passing its directive on the same. Claiming that the people are waiting for an opportunity to throw out the BJP, Siddaramaiah appealed to party workers to not rest until showing the door to the government. “The JD(S) has no policies or pro-people programmes; it is an opportunistic outfit,” he said, adding that it was acting in concert with the BJP. Later in his address, KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar demanded a white paper on the state’s finances from the government. “A government which can present Rs 1 lakh crore-plus budget has no funds to tackle drought,” Parameshwar remarked sarcastically. He demanded the government to divulge details on the impact of the much publicised GIM-2010. Parameshwar went on to assert that the government was attempting to pull wool over the public’s eyes on investment in the event’s first edition. Many Congress leaders, including Motamma, were arrested, and later released, in their attempt to picket the Vidhana Soudha.
