THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On Monday, the residents of Thiruvananthapuram are likely to hear tall claims and false promises once again. The City Corporation’s annual budget is learnt to have a host of ambitious projects, besides some other plans which had a found place in the previous budget also.A quick check of last year’s budget shows that many of the projects have either remained unimplemented or are progressing at a rather slow pace (see box). Interestingly, a tall claim in the previous budget - setting up an Environment Research Centre and a Nursing College at Vilappilsala - will be repeated this time also. The Rs 5-crore project was announced as a solace to the residents in Vilappilsala village, where the Corporation’s solid waste treatment plant has been causing large-scale environmental problems. But with the Vilappilsala residents blocking the transportation of waste to the plant for the past three months, the project is likely to remain on paper, again. ‘’The focus will be on projects that are viable and practical. There will be no mega projects,’’ Deputy Mayor Happykumar said. He said around 50 per cent of the projects announced in the last budget were either implemented or are progressing. ‘’The project to develop modern residential villas in slums is progressing well. The first among them was set up at Kalladimukham,’’ he added.
