Horror unwrapped for locals in Haldwani after the demolition of an illegal madrassa led to massive violence and riots. Many lives changed that night but what Mohammad Aman and his family had faced was nothing short of a nightmare.
Aman’s world came crashing down when he took his father, who was lying on the street after receiving a bullet injury amid the riots, to the hospital, only to find his brother Mohd Anas already there with a bullet injury below his waist. The family lost both Anas and his father to the violence that night.
According to an Indian Express report, Mohd Aman said that both he and his father, Zahid Hussain, were working at a construction site before the violence erupted. Fortunately, Aman returned home but his father stayed back to complete some chores.
“When I came to know about the violence, I called Anas to come back home as he too was outside. I came to know that one of my friends was stuck in the market, and I left to find her. When Anas found out, he followed me. Meanwhile, my father reached home, only to be informed that Anas hadn’t returned. He went to find him,” the publication quoted Aman as saying.
“My father was hit by a bullet in the chest while standing near a dairy. Alerted by a neighbour, I found him lying injured on the street. I tried to lift him with the help of two others and we carried him to a local clinic. When I reached, I found Anas already there, injured,” he added.
Mohd Aman said that after the first aid, doctors asked them to take both his father and brother to a hospital for further treatment but they could not arrange the means to do so and soon both the men died.
“We finally carried them back to our house. After the post-mortem, we buried them in the presence of the district administration on Friday. Only five people from our family were allowed to attend the final rites,” he said.
Haldwani Violence: Uttarakhand Sought Additional Central Forces
The Uttarakhand government has sought more central forces for deployment in Haldwani where violence erupted on February 8 after the demolition of an “illegal” madrassa, officials said.
They said four companies — containing about 100 personnel each — of the Central Paramilitary Forces have been sought from the Home Ministry to maintain law and order in the Banbhoolpura area, the epicentre of the mob violence.
Curfew Lifted From Outers, Investigation Ordered
A magisterial probe was ordered on Saturday into the February 8 riots after the demolition of an “illegal” madrassa in Haldwani, while curfew was lifted from the outer areas of town but remained in force in Banbhoolpura, the epicentre of the mob violence.
Police said they have begun a search for Abdul Malik who had built the structure.
