MALAPPURAM: The CPI state executive and district committee meetings convened here decided to remove the party district secretary V Unnikrishnan from the post and selected former assistant secretary P P Suneer as the new district chief. “The decision was taken as the explanation given by Unnikrishnan on the defeat of the party in Ernad was found insufficient,” said CPI state secretary C K Chandrappan at a press conference here on Wednesday. He said that the district committee failed to implement the state executive decision regarding the candidature in Ernad constituency. However, the former district secretary has been included in the newly constituted 13-member district executive.“He was ready to give an explanation to the party on the issue unlike Rahmathulla, who betrayed us and left the party without giving any explanation,” said Chandrappan. Replying to a question, he said that somebody in the LDF was responsible for the defeat in Ernad. “We have taken up the issue with the CPM and hope that they will look into it.” Chandrappan, however, said that the LDF fought the Assembly elections with unprecedented unity. On the merger suggestions put forward by Sitaram Yechury, he said that the present political situation in India, where a united Left democracy slogan suffered a setback, makes such a reunification more relevant. “There are no big differences between the parties. The discussions should begin right now if such a reunification is under consideration. The situation may be different after 20 years,” he said. On V S Achuthanandan’s allegation that he is being targeted by the UDF, Chandrappan said that such attacks would be faced by the LDF unitedly. Former minister Benoy Viswom, who was also present at the press meet, said that Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh’s stand on Athirappilly and Edakochi projects are generally acceptable. “We should consider the impact of such projects on environment, not just profit,” he said.
