Left parties are pressurising the UPA Government for speedy implementation of the Urban Employment scheme.

Mangalore: The Left parties would fight for implementation of the Urban Employment scheme, a programme envisaged in the Common Minimum Programme of UPA Government, CPI-M Politburo member Brinda Karat, MP, said on Tuesday.

Left parties had been pressurising the UPA Government for speedy implementation of the scheme, Karat said addressing a rally of the eighth Domestic Youth Federation of India Convention.

On the issue of reservation to OBCs in higher education institutions, she said the Left was of the view that there should be an economic criterion while deciding on extending reservation.

She also said that the creamy layer of affluent OBCs should be excluded from this benefit.

She appealed to the agitating students to call off the strike and instead reach an amicable settlement through dialogue.
