THRISSUR: The weather was sunny on Tuesday, but the faces of the assemblage at the Sahitya Akademi were not bright as the body of Sukumar Azhikode was brought there around 10.30 am. The hundreds who followed it from Amala Hospital as well as the crowd which gathered on the premises were quiet. Azhikode’s body was laid down in the main hall and the police formed separate queues for the public to get the final glimpse of the man.People from all walks of life had already begun coming in, from all spheres - politics, culture, cinema and so forth. K K Hiranyan, P T Kunjumuhammad, V K Sreeraman, Madambu Kunjikkuttan, Jayaraj Warrier, Anwar Ali, C N Balakrishnan, P C Chacko MP, K P Rajendran ex MLA, MLAs Therambil Ramakrishnan, T N Prathapan, V S Sunilkumar, and others, along with Mayor I P Paul, Mar Aprem Metropolitan, journalist George S Paul, theatre activist Sam, Police Commissioner P Vijayan, IG B Sandhya, and others were among them.It was noon and the crowd was still pouring in paying tributes to Azhikode. His confidant Suresh was around. Messages of condolences from those who could not attend the funeral had reached the Akademi and vice-president Balachandran Vadakkedath and secretary R Gopalakrishnan distributed them to the media. Around 4 pm, O N V Kurup arrived.“We had met several times in this hall. Now, I don’t have words to describe how it felt and how it feels. Now Azhikode is gone. The light he acquired from his school founded by Vagbhatananda and his words shall fill the future with light, leading the way and he will live in our hearts,” said ONV in the presence of Sahitya Akademi president Perumbadavam Sreedharan.Earlier, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy paid homage to Azhikode, along with ministers K C Joseph, V K Ibrahimkunju and Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. The guard of honour was given to Azhikode, bidding him a befitting farewell, after which his body was taken to the vehicle for the last journey to his birthplace Kannur, around 4.30 pm.
