In a major relief to the striking sanitation workers in the national capital, the Delhi High Court on Friday asked the Arvind Kejriwal government to release the pending salaries of MCD workers by June 15, even as Delhi LG Najeeb Jung assured MCD mayors that the crisis would be resolved and that Rs 493 crore will be released by Friday itself.
Later, addressing a press conference in the national capital, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) passed on the blame to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules Delhi's civic bodies, terming it as one of the most corrupt organisations. AAP leader Dilip Pandey demanded a probe into role of BJP in the issue, alleging that the funds meant for workers' salaries were used for other purposes.
Pointing that Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had allocated a sum of Rs 2000 crore for the MCD, the Aam Aadmi Party alleged that not even a single rupee had reached the beneficiaries yet.
Meanwhile, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday met sanitation workers in east Delhi.
On Monday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met the striking sanitation workers and promised them to release Rs 500 crore to clear their salary dues.
Sanitation workers in the capital have been on strike for over two months, citing non payment of their salaries by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. According to the East Municipal Corporation, it is awaiting funds in order to clear the salary dues of the striking workers.
With many areas in east Delhi, such as Mayur Vihar, Ganesh Nagar and Laxmi Nagar, almost becoming dumping grounds with garbage piling up outside colonies, residents have expressed fear that the problem may spark a major health crisis.
The sanitation workers had also staged a protest outside the residence of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Reacting to the issue, the AAP government had alleged that the funds meant for the salaries of the sanitation workers were diverted by authorities towards making swimming pools and stadiums.
