Delhi Metro extended to Qutab Minar
The central government has cleared a proposal for Delhi Metro corridor from the Central Secretariat to the Qutab Minar.

New Delhi: The central government has cleared a proposal for an underground Delhi Metro corridor from the Central Secretariat to the Qutab Minar, Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken said on Thursday.

The 12.52-km-long corridor has been "sanctioned by the government for implementation as part of the Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System (DMRTS) project, second phase," Maken informed the Rajya Sabha.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has pegged the estimated completion cost of the above corridor at Rs 32.99 billion.

Apart from the Central Secretariat, stations would be erected at the Udyog Bhawan, Race Course, Jor Bagh, INA market, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Green Park, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Saket and Qutab Minar.

The minister the DMRC has put in a proposal for the construction of a 20.16-km-long corridor from the Central Secretariat to Badarpur.

At an estimated cost of Rs 36.03 billion, the corridor will be completed before the Delhi Commonwealth Games - 2010 - if approved.

The stations planned in this corridor would be at Khan Market, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Jangpura, Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand, East of Kailash, Nehru Place, Kalkaji Mandir, Govind Puri, Okhla, Jasola, Sarita Vihar, Mohan Estate, Tughlakabad and Badarpur.

Delhi Metro, the sleek mass transport system of the Indian capital, is spread across a length of over 65 km and carries nearly 525,000 passengers everyday.
