New Delhi: Surprise rains and thunder storm in several parts of the national capital on Thursday brought much needed respite to Delhiites reeling under scorching heat coupled with long power outages for the past one week. The city received 2.8 mm of rain till 8:30 pm, the MeT department said, as people ventured out of their offices and homes to enjoy the pleasant weather.
The MET department has predicted that this relief from the heat will continue till Wednesday. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 41 degree Celsius while minimum at 31 degree Celsius on Friday. Partly cloudy sky with possibilities of light rain and thunderstorms in some areas are predicted for the day.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 41.1 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, and down from Wednesday's 43.6 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature between June 6 and 10 was on a record breaking spree as it was 45 degrees and above. After the rains, the temperature came down by 4-5 notches.
Apart from the intense heat, people in the city are having a harrowing time with long blackouts ranging up to six hours as authorities are yet to restore many major power transmission lines damaged by the storm on May 30. Maximum temperature of 41.1 degrees was recorded at Safdarjung observatory, considered to be the official reading for the city.
Elsewhere too, temperature dropped significantly and came below the 45 degree Celsius mark. At Palam, the day temperature was recorded at 43.6 degree Celsius while at Ayanagar and Ridge area, the maximum temperature was recorded at 42.2 and 41.5 degree Celsius respectively.
The minimum temperature in the city on Wednesday was recorded at 30.5 degree Celsius, three notches above the normal. Humidity levels remained between 57 and 31 per cent during the day.
