New Delhi: Traders in the Capital were optimistic of getting relief on the issue of unauthorised shops in residential areas as the civic authorities presented "ground realities" to the Supreme Court on Friday.

"For the first time, the Government presented the ground realities in the apex court and we hope the court will weigh all aspects on Monday before giving a final verdict," secretary general of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), Praveen Khandelwal said.

"We have suspended our strike for the time being, and if we don't get any respite, we will again go back on the streets," Khandelwal added.

As per the direction given by the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the matter, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday filed a fresh petition in the apex court pleading its inability to carry out sealing operations due to the tense law and order situation created by the three-day traders' shutdown.

The MCD said that as the shutdown ended on a violent note on Wednesday, there were serious practical difficulties in commencing sealing operations.

MCD counsel Sanjiv Sen submitted the application before a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice KG Balakrishnan and requested that it be listed for hearing on Monday along with the earlier petitions — filed by the MCD and the Centre.

Traders say that once the sealing drive resumes, apart from shopkeepers, over 20,000 doctors running private clinics, nearly 1,500 schools including play schools, over 1,000 computer training centres and hundreds of salons and beauty parlours occupying over 20 square feet of space will also be hit.
