Alleging police inaction, Renuka Behera started a fast-unto-death stir along with her family members in front of Salepur Tehsil on Monday.
A resident of Jairampur village under Salepur police limits, she had lodged a complaint against her neighbours for constructing a temple blocking the road in front of her house. She was allegedly assaulted for opposing the construction.
When the police did not act on her complaint, Renuka submitted a petition in Salepur Tehsil. Considering the case, the Salepur Tehsildar Rudra Narayan Dash on May 14 issued prohibitory orders against the unauthorised construction and directed the opposite parties to vacate the area within 30 days.
However, the accused persons, defying prohibitory orders, completed the temple. Renuka again approached the Das who then passed eviction orders and made police requisition for eviction which was scheduled for June 22. “I have been running from pillar to post for the last three months but in vain. We are facing problems because of the obstruction,” said Renuka.
Earlier, Renuka had submitted copies of her petition to the Salepur Tehsildar, the Collector and the District Magistrate, Cuttack, the IIC, Salepur police station, the SP (Rural) Cuttack, the Chief Minister and the Human Right Protection Cell, Bhubaneswar, in this regard.
The Tehsildar said eviction orders could not be executed due to lack of adequate police force.
