KOCHI: Ernakulam District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth on Wednesday met the Jewish couple who was issued a deportation notice for violating visa norms by taking part in religious activities. The meeting followed a High Court order directing the Collector to hear the couple’s version and submit a report to the court.Pareeth said a report will be submitted within a week. He said that Shnoer Zalman Bernstein and wife Yaffa Shendi Keing had valid visas and can stay in the country till their visas expire. The couple had applied for a visa which permits them to engage in the synagogue service but was instead given multiple-entry visas. The couple was unaware of it. Sheik Pareeth said he will consult the Ministry of Home Affairs before submitting the report.Josephai Abraham, president of the Association of Kerala Jews, accompanied the couple at the meeting. He said that the Collector had told the couple not to conduct any religious activities but can participate in prayers with other Jews.
