CHENNAI: A writ plea has been made in the Madras High Court to restrain the Puzhal Central Prison Superintendent and the Chennai Corporation Commissioner from letting out the sewerage and human waste from the prison in and around its compound and the surrounding open areas in the locality. The first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam, before which the public interest writ petition from DJ Venkatesan of Puzhal came up for hearing today, ordered notice to the authorities concerned, returnable in four weeks. Petitioner alleged that there was no proper sewage system in the prison. The human waste and the sewerage were periodically drained by pumping out from the tanks erected for storage. The sewerage was flowing like a river and remained stagnated. During summer, the residue dried up and parched under the sun. This caused air and ground water pollution and various health hazards to the people living around the prison. After sending a representation to the Pollution Control Board, petitioner filed the present writ petition.
