New Delhi: The ongoing Dubai Open WTA event has been fined a record $300 thousand by the WTA Tour board for barring Israeli tennis player Shaher Peer from participating in the tournament.
Earlier this month, the 21 year old was denied a visa into Dubai, making it impossible for her to participate in the 2 million dollar event.
The tour rules strictly state that no host country can deny a player the right to compete at any event for which they have qualified by ranking, and so, the WTA Tour board made a decision to impose the fine and award Peer with 44,250 dollars, the amount equal to the average prize money she earned per tournament in 2008.
Her compatriot, Andy Ram, however, was granted a Visa to play in Dubai and he was quite relieved that that the dispute had been settled.
