New Delhi: Clashes between members of the RSS-backed ABVP and the Left-leaning AISA at Delhi University’s Ramjas College left eight police personnel injured, the Delhi Police said on Wednesday.

The clash was triggered by an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid, facing sedition charges, and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on 'Culture of Protests' which was withdrawn by the college authorities on Tuesday following opposition by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Photojournalists from the Times of India and The Quint were also injured in the clashes.

The ABVP supporters had on Tuesday resorted to violence following which the college authorities withdrew the invitation to Rashid and Khalid, triggering widespread anger among a section of students and teachers who had planned a march on Wednesday to Maurice Nagar police station, demanding action against those involved in the "vandalism".

On their part, the ABVP members did not allow the march to proceed and allegedly locked up the students and teachers inside the college campus. At this point, some AISA members tried to barge inside the college to "rescue the captives" resulting in the clashes.

Maurice Nagar SHO Aarti Sharma was among the cops injured. An assistant sub-inspector sustained a hairline fracture, police said.

Additional DCP-I and Additional DCP-II will conduct an inquiry into the matter and prepare a report. An FIR under sections of rioting and assault on public servant was registered against unknown persons.
