Eighth arrest in journalist J Dey murder case
Police suspect Vinod Asrani alias Vinod Chembur financed the murder of Jyotirmoy Dey.

Mumbai Crime Branch on Sunday made one more arrest in the Jyotirmoy Dey murder, taking the count to eight arrested in the case.

Vinod Asrani alias Vinod Chembur was arrested and questioned by the Crime Branch, who are probing whether he financed the killing of the Mid Day journalist.

Vinod Chembur, the person who is suspected to have helped the shooters identify Dey, has been picked up for questioning. We have a reason to believe that he may have played a key role in the murder," said a senior police official.

Mumbai police had earlier rounded up seven suspects allegedly belonging to the Chhota Rajan gang who shot dead the veteran crime journalist Dey on June 11.

According to the Mumbai Police's version - after conducting two recces outside Dey's workplace and at Powai where he lived, Rajan henchman and main shooter Rohit Thangappan alias Satish Kalia shot Dey with a sophisticated, foreign made .32 bore revolver.

Dey, Editor (Special Investigation), Mid Day, who extensively covered underworld and crime for over two decades, was gunned down by the assailants in suburban Powai.

His postmortem report revealed that Dey was shot at from a close range. Five bullets were pumped into his chest, while four of them pierced his body, the fifth one ended up just under his right shoulder.
