COIMBATORE: Nuclear projects should be subjected to rigorous evaluation so that they are not stopped on environmental grounds, said MR Srinivasan, member, Atomic Energy Commission, here on Wednesday. On the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project, he said, “We decided on the site in 1984 and believe it is one of the best sites for a nuclear power station. The design of the plant, evolved in Russia, incorporates the most advanced safety measures and belongs to Generation 3 Plus.” “The fisherfolk living around Koodankulam were shaken by the Fukushima accident which they saw on TV. However, some with ulterior motives have cashed in on the fear factor,” he alleged, adding that the Fukushima reactors belonged to the first generation and lacked many safety features that the Koodankulam plant has.
