CHENNAI: Former DMK MLA of Villivakkam constituency B Ranganathan, and his aide, who were arrested on August 2 on land grabbing charges, were booked under the Goondas Act on Tuesday. Ranganathan and T V Venkatesan alias Gowrishanker were arrested after the Nolambur Annamalai Avenue Plot Owners’ Association lodged a complaint with the local police on August 1, alleging that the duo had grabbed 20.59 acre of land worth `150 crore through forged documents.On the Nolambur inspector’s recommendation, the commissioner of police directed that the former MLA and his aide to be booked under the Goondas Act, a press release said.Man sets Wife on FirePolice are on the lookout for a 32-year-old man who absconded after attempting to set his wife on fire at Shankar Nagar on Monday. Jayaraman, a watchman at a construction site in Korattur, raped and murdered a six-year-old girl in June 2010. Her body was later found in a nearby lake. Subsequently, the Korattur Police registered a case and arrested Jayaraman. On Monday, the fast track court sentenced Jayaraman to life with a fine of `1,000. 23 Sovereigns StolenAround 23 sovereigns of gold jewellery was reportedly stolen from a hotel guest at Vadapalani on Monday. On Sunday Subramani of Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district, who was on a pilgrimage, removed his personal jewellery and kept them in a bag in his hotel room. The next morning he found them missing. Subramani lodged a complaint with the local police station.History-sheeter Hacked to DeathA notorious rowdy Velu (46) alias Nondi of Srinivasan Nagar was hacked to death by a gang in Ambattur on Tuesday. Police said he was going to Shamugapuram when a gang in a car stopped his bike and attacked him. Velu had 11 cases against him in Ambattur and Avadi including a murder case of 1988, police said. The motive of the murder is still unclear, said an official.
