A sacked manager scared the living daylights out of the employees of a steel-manufacturing unit at Sadayakkuppam village in Tiruvottiyur, near here, by brandishing a pistol and firing before them. Fortunately, no one was injured and no casualties were reported.
The manager, Nandhu, said to be aged between 40 and 50 years, was working at TMC Cable Factory, owned by Karaikudi-native Sendhil Kumar. About 10 days ago, Sendhil, who detected Nandhu’s involvement in selling the firm’s steel cables illegally, pulled him up and terminated his services.
Nandhu, a native of Rajasthan and a relative of the unit’s previous owner Arun Joshua, arrived at the factory on Friday night brandishing a loaded pistol. Advancing menacingly towards the staff, he shouted out threats, warning them of dire consequences if they complained to police.
Later, he fired in the air. Most of the staff fled the spot. However, police from Sathangadu got wind of the incident and arrived at the spot the next day, only to be informed that Nandhu had escaped. Police have begun a manhunt for Nandhu.
Sathangadu inspector Kingsley told Express: “We are conducting intensive searches to trace the manager. But, we have not met with any success.” He was inconclusive over whether the pistol in Nandhu’s possession was a non-licensed one. “All we can say is that the pistol was not registered at our station,” he said.
