New Delhi: Civil defence volunteers in Delhi have decided to practice Gandhigiri and given red roses to those who violate the odd/even vehicle number formula from January 1, 2016.
Volunteers will be deployed at 200 points across Delhi to keep an eye on the violators. They have been clearly briefed to not get into any altercation. A minimum of four volunteers will be deployed at every point.
Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party government has decided to allow odd and even numbered private vehicle on the roads for 15 days from January 1 in a bid to control rising pollution. Odd numbered four-wheelers will play on odd dates and even numbered vehicles on even dates.
"From January 1, 2016, odd number cars will be allowed on odd dates and even number cars on even dates. The scheme will not be applicable for Sundays but on other days, it will be implemented from 8 am to 8 pm," Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said while announcing the scheme. Those violating the scheme will be fined for Rs 2,000.
Kejriwal added that his cavalcade will not be exempted from the scheme but medical emergency will not come under its purview. Single women drivers have been exempted from this scheme while children up to 12 years of age can travel with a women driver. a total of 25 categories have been exempted from the scheme.
The Unites States of America Embassy has also backed the Delhi government's odd and even number formula, saying its officials and employees will comply with the ruling. American employees have been encouraged to cooperate with the scheme. Diplomats have said that they will carpool or travel by public transport.
