They are ensured a compensation of 50,000 rupees in case of any mishap.

Mumbai: Adorned with gold, silver and everything precious, the 75 -year-old Lalbaugcha Raja, Mumbai's popular Ganesh idol, attracts lakhs of visitors and crores of rupees and jewellery as donations.

Concerns regarding the safety of their property and devotees has led the comittee to insure not just the pandal but also the faithful who come here, ensuring a compensation of 50,000 rupees in case of any mishap.

President, Lalbaugcha Raja Sunil Joshi (in Hindi), "We have insured the pandal for 2.65 crore and also got an insurance of 1. 10 crore for all the devotees. So we have a total cover of 3.75 crores.

Underwriter, Bajaj Allianz T A Ramalingam says, "It's a public liability. If there is a stampede or fire and any such problem, they will get insurance to rebuild the whole structure."

Insuring mandals is not a new phenomenon, but with mandals getting richer and richer and security concerns going higher, the insurance amounts have surely reached astronomical heights.

GSB mandal trustee, Dinesh Pai says, "We have insured the jewellery and other things for 8.24 crore."

The move has come as a relief for the devotees.

It certainly looks as though Lord Ganesha has filled the coffers of insurance companies.
