DEHRADUN: Their looks were an easy giveaway of their identities till now but not any more! Mingling seamlessly with the civilian population will no longer be a worrisome task for the Gentlemen Cadets as in a quiet but significant move, the Army has decided to replace the traditional military hairdo of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) cadets with a trendier cut to suit the visual- media dominated age.The cadets, till today, used to stand out due to their famous ‘Katora Cut’ wherein the top of the head was given a flat appearance while the rest of the hair was shaved off. This unique hairdo often proved to be a security concern, apart from the cadets becoming the butt of many jokes. The katora haircut was in vogue in the Army institution owing to its low maintenance. The cut is easier to carry off while doing rigorous physical workout and looks good with formal wear .“The change has been brought about from this year onwards. The cadets will now be allowed to keep short hair till just above their ears,” a senior officer at the academy told Express. But the happiest are the cadets as their ‘funny’ appearance is a thing of the past.On days of “liberties”, when the cadets were allowed to go to nearby towns, the to-be officers had not been able to enjoy anonymity due to their looks.About 1,800 cadets are being imparted training at the academy after which they will be commissioned into the army as officers. The cadets were expected to go to the barber at the academy on a weekly basis to maintain the sharpness of the cut.The barbers at IMA are also gearing up to meet the new demand.
