NEW DELHI: German national Sonnteg Reiner Herman, who was deported to Frankfurt, was found to be indulging in activities in Nagercoil which were not in sync with “the declared purpose” of his stay in the country, sources in the Home Ministry revealed on Wednesday.Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said Sonnteg, who was here on a tourist visa, was flown back on Tuesday night as his conduct here was certainly not consistent with that of a tourist. The German national came to India on a tourist visa, despite a look-out notice against him for activities he allegedly indulged in during his previous visits, the Minister said.“A tourist who comes to India cannot associate with activities that are semi-political and (involve) protests. That is not the reason for which a tourist visa is issued,” he said.Attempts to get a response from the German Embassy here in Delhi did not yield any response. On the issue of the erring NGOs, Chidambaram revealed that cases were filed against four of them after prima facie evidence was found on their involvement in the diversion of foreign funds for purposes other than for what they were received. However, the Home Minister declined to name the organisations. He also did not specify whether these funds were diverted for fuelling the anti- KKNPP protests in Koodankulam.“I have not said a word about Koodankulam. Investigation reveals that there appears to be diversion of funds. Therefore, we decided to register cases against them under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act,” he added.Chidambaram underlined that inspection of the accounts of these NGOs was a routine matter. All that he was willing to disclose was that the CBI was asked to register cases against two of the NGOs, while the Tamil Nadu police would deal with the other two.“Prima facie, there is evidence to register cases,” Chidambaram said.To a poser on whether the investigation against the four NGOs could be described as a coincidence in the context of the anti-nuclear protests, he retorted, “I don’t know.” Meanwhile, sources in the Home Ministry said that one of the four NGOs is based in Tuticorin, while the other two are based in Kanyakumari.
