A second round of Body Mass Index (BMI) tests for 1,884 state police personnel classified as obese in August 2023 began on Tuesday, Assam’s director general of police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh noted.
“The review BMI testing for the 1884 police personnel has started at Jorhat, Silchar and Guwahati,” GP Singh wrote on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter). The re-examination of police personnel in the obese category would start at Guwahati, Silchar and Jorhat on Tuesday, Singh stated.
In May last year, the Assam police department gave three months to its personnel to mend their BMI and participate in a check-up after August 15. In the event of failing the BMI test, the personnel were given three months to get back in shape.
The Assam state government, at the time, had said all those who had a BMI of 30+ would be given another three months to reduce their weight before a second round of tests in January 2024. Upon failing to meet this fitness standard, the personnel will be asked to quit the force under a voluntary retirement scheme barring those with a health condition such as thyroid disease.
After the first round of BMI tests in August 2023, GP Singh noted that 97.53% of the total force had cleared the test.
In September 2023, Singh said that all police personnel with 30+ BMI would get free medical support before the second round of tests in January. “They’ll go through free liver function tests, kidney function tests, whole blood profiles etc. If medical interventions are required, we’ll provide that too,” the Assam DGP was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.
What is BMI Ratio?
Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat corresponding to height and weight that applies to adult men and women. It is used to determine if a person’s weight falls within the healthy range.
