BANGALORE: Showing the way for urban dwellers to start terrace and backyard farming Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd (BCIL) and Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra (GKVK) is launching the 'Future of Food' campaign, an initiative to encourage urban farming in Bangalore.
The Chairman, BCIL, Chandrashekhar Hariharan announced that a workshop for students would be conducted at St Joseph's College to train the students. Sessions will be held every Sunday at 11:00 am starting from July 17 at Sadashivnagar in batches of 50 students. Announcing the launch of the event, Hariharan said, "Through this initiative we hope to reach to over 2,000 students and household in the city. These students in turn will take what they learn at the event and spread awareness regarding the benefits of urban farming and how simple and rewarding it is for everyone. The initiative could be the stepping stone for a larger movement to create a sustainable environment."

Hariharan also stressed the need for urban farming in the city. He said, "The population of Bangalore has grown by about 50 per cent in the last 10 years leading to an increase in the demand for vegetables as well. Apparently, when roughly calculated the city requires about 80 lakh kilos of vegetables on a daily basis."

'Save natural

Speaking about the benefit of urban farming he said, "Apart from drastically reducing the food miles (the distance a food item has to travel from farm to consumer), the key benefits include protection of natural resources, efficient use of vacant space/terrace thereby providing them pesticidefree organic food."
