New Delhi: The Government and Industry should work together towards the common goal of preventing and combating computer crime to make the internet a secure place, speakers at a workshop on cyber crime said in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.
Classes on cyber crimes, cyber laws and cyber forensics were handled by experts in the one-day workshop for officials, police and public.
The event was jointly organised by state IT Mission and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC).
Joint Director of CDAC, Bhadran V K, who spoke on cyber crimes, said computer-related crimes should be criminalised.
Loss due to software piracy in India alone was to the tune of Rs 300 crore, while online hacking, defacing of sites and password theft caused a loss of Rs 90 crore.
Advocate Shyam Padman, who dealt with cyber laws, said the Information Technology Act, 2000 aimed at providing the legal infrastructure for e-commerce in India.
The class on cyber forensics, the emerging science helping victims of computer crime to discover evidence and prosecute criminals in a court of law, was handled by K L Thomas, Joint Director, Resource Centre for Cyber Forensics (RCCF).
The organisers say similar programmes to equip Akshaya e-literacy centres and police to handle cyber crimes will be conducted in all districts and software like e-mail tracer and cybercheck would be distributed to Akshaya centres and the police.
A cyber crime portal and a call centre would also be set up to provide information and help people handle cyber crimes.
