Government to have safety check on high-rises

In the wake of increasing fire accidents, the state government has decided to review safety measures and building plans of all high-rise buildings in the state once in two years.

Deputy Chief Minister R Ashok told the Legislative Council here on Monday that the decision to review building plans was taken as several building owners keep on changing interiors of their buildings and electrical wiring as per their needs.

“In such cases, one would have to take a no objection certificate (NOC) again from the concerned authorities,” he added. He was replying to the question raised by ruling party member Dr M R Doreswamy on the recent fire accidents.

Ashok said that the state government had a policy to have fire stations in all taluk headquarters.

“At present only 30 taluk headquarters have no fire stations. This year we will set up fire stations in 10 taluks,” he said.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has procured motor cycles and small jeeps with mist technology so that they can push themselves through the narrow lanes in emergencies.

“This apart, the modern escalators, steel-cutting equipment have also been provided to the department,” he added.
