Uttarakhand government has warned private sugar mills of stern action if they failed to pay arrears worth Rs 174 crore to sugarcane growers in 15 days. Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar, who held a meeting with the management of private sugar mills in Dehradun on Wednesday, asked them to speed up payment of arrears to sugarcane growers and ensure that the dues are settled within 15 days, official sources said on Thursday.
Asking them to prepare a roadmap to achieve the objective within 15 days, he said they should intimate the state government about the initiatives taken in this regard after a fortnight. Under no circumstance would the state government let the interest of sugarcane growers suffer, he said.
The state government will be forced to act against them if they delayed payments to sugarcane growers, the Chief Secretary warned. He also asked sugar mill managements to create resources they need to ensure timely payment to sugarcane growers. Uttarakhand has 10 sugar mills out of which four are private.
