New Delhi: The government has given BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) a 60-day reprieve, while it assesses RIM's proposals.

RIM has given certain proposals for lawful access to its data which will be operationalised immediately.

Home Ministry officials had met RIM representatives a day before the deadline runs out for the firm to give security agencies access to its secure data.

The government says it wants the means to fully track and read BlackBerry's secure email and instant messaging services that officials fear could be misused by militants.

RIM uses powerful codes to scramble, or encrypt, email messages as they travel between a BlackBerry device and a computer known as a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that is designed to secure those emails.

The Canadian government has backed Waterloo-based RIM and has written to Indian authorities stressing that disruption of BlackBerry services is not a viable solution and that the security concerns are not BlackBerry specific.
