Ahmedabad: A day after an elderly couple sought the district collector's permission to end their life saying they are "fed up" with the "abuse" by their son, their daughter-in-law attempted suicide on Saturday, apparently over the ignominy. Leena Balda (35) attempted suicide by consuming phenyl kept in the bathroom. She was rushed to Ahmedabad civil hospital where her medical condition is such that her statement cannot be recorded, police said.
According to police, Leena's husband Manish Balda told them that she was upset over media reports claiming that Bhau Das Gridhari Balda (64) and his wife Leela (63) had been subjected to cruelty by Manish and wanted to end their life. Manish told police that after reading the reports that appeared in the local media on Saturday morning, Leena went inside the bathroom and consumed phenyl in a bid to end her life.
"After coming out of bathroom, she began vomiting heavily and was rushed to the civil hospital by Manish", police said. The senior citizen couple had reportedly submitted an application at the city collector's office on Friday seeking permission to end their lives, citing "persistent misbehaviour by their son".
The senior Baldas had reportedly charged their son Manish with often beating them under the influence of alcohol and Leena of threatening to sue them for demanding dowry and throwing them out of house, official sources said. Police said they would record Leena's statement only after her medical condition improves.
