CHENNAI: Popular jewellery designer, Asha Kamal Modi whose creations have adorned the likes of royalty such as the late Princess Diana, actor Rekha and accessorised heroines in films like Devdas, Monsoon Wedding and Zubeida is out with her latest collection — titled ‘Aishwarya’. Already exhibited across the United States of America, UK and Singapore, the collection was unveiled for the first time in India at a recent opening in Chennai at Art Karat, Nungambakkam. Kamal Modi, Founder and Chairman of Art Karat explained, “This is one of those collections which is affordable and yet grandiose in design. The gold has been replaced by silver and diamonds replaced with zercone.” He gestures at the array of intricately handcrafted creations — delicate Mughal style danglers with a single rain drop emerald to finish, an italian coral shell pearl necklace and one of the masterpieces, a three layered choker encrusted with aquamarine emeralds. Apparently the name for the collection, ‘Aishwarya’ was inspired after Asha worked on Devdas, as the ensemble consisting of over 700 pieces is a tribute to the Indian woman. Kamal added, “Unfortunately in our country, we have several thousand craftsmen who are out of jobs and really have the art of making jewellery in their blood. So a venture like this does help and with this collection, everything from the melting of silver to the attachment of the price tag, has been done by hand.”Also present at the launch were Princess of Vijaynagaram, Vidya Singh and Sunita Shahaney, Honorary Consul of Chile. Sadly, Asha herself was not to be seen. Kamal Modi revealed, “Well she is busy working on some new pieces, and when an artist is at work nothing can be more important.”
