Narnaund: It might not be a big city but is certainly a prestigious seat considering the importance it holds in the assembly polls for Haryana. A part of the Hisar district of Haryana, Narnaund is witnessing a close battle between the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
INLD's Raj Singh Mor, who is fighting to retain the seat that his party won in the 2009 assembly elections, is up against BJP's Captain Abhimanyu. Mor's wife Saroj had won the seat for the party in the previous elections but she has now handed over the baton to her husband for the 2014 battle.
Saroj, the sitting MLA from Narnaud, won the 2009 election with a margin of almost 10,000 votes. INLD presented a good show in the recently held Lok Sabha polls too where its candidate Dushyant Chautala got a lead of 43,000 votes from the Narnaund seat, against Haryana Janhit Congress' (HJC) Kuldeep Bishnoi.
While Raj Singh Mor has taken voluntary retirement from police services to contest elections, Abnhimanyu is has served in the Indian Army. Abhimanyu has been the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Hindi daily Hari Bhoomi apart from owning several other businesses.
An influential Brahmin candidate Ram Kumar Gautam, is also being seen as another close contender. He had won the Narnaund assembly seat on the BJP ticket in 2004 assembly polls and later joined the Congress. As a Congress candidate, he contested from Narnaund in 2009 but was defeated by his INLD rival Saroj.
Other candidates from this seat are Bahujan Samaj Party's Surender Panghal and recently formed Haryana Lokhit Party's (HLP) Ram Mehar. There are several other independent candidates too but they are unlikely to make any impact.
The main issues in Narnaud are basic amenities like electricity and water. People though claim that the area has seen tremendous development over the years under Saroj and Raj Singh Mor's leadership.
Narnaund assembly constituency falls under the Hisar parliamentary constituency. With a population of nearly 2 lakh, Narnaund holds immense prospects as an emerging city.
Earlier considered a stronghold of the Congress, the constituency for several years has been a non-Congress party. Chaudhary Virender Singh won four consecutive elections from the constituency and was the MLA from 1977 to 1996.
