Whether it is the hard to miss off-screen camaraderie, the on-screen chemistry, or the kissing sequences of actors Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor, their upcoming film '2 States' has been making headlines for multiple reasons. For the uninitiated, the film is based on Chetan Bhagat's popular novel '2 States - The Story of My Marriage', which charts the author's romantic journey and the problems he and his wife Anusha Surya Narayanan had to combat to convince their culturally opposite families for their marriage.

'2 States - The Story of My Marriage' is the second Chetan Bhagat book after 'Five Point Someone' which is largely based on his personal life. Chetan wrote this novel after he quit his job at an investment bank.

Those who haven't read the book, we get you 13 plotlines of '2 States - The Story of My Marriage'.

The book, which is partially autobiographical, revolves around the lives of Krish and Ananya belonging to different states and the problems they face in convincing parents to give consent to their marriage.

The story starts in the IIM Ahmedabad mess, where Krish, a Punjabi boy who belongs to Delhi, spots Ananya, a Tamilian from Chennai, fighting with the mess staff. In an attempt to settle the issue, Krish intervenes and ends up sacrificing his sweet dish to her.

Soon, Krish strikes up a friendship with Ananya, who is referred to as 'Best girl of the fresher batch' and the two begin to study together every night. Quite unsurprisingly, both of them fall for each other.

As soon as they get their jobs, Ananya and Krish decide to get married. But once wedding plans come into the equation, they realise they have a grueling task before them - getting their parents' approval.

Krish, who manages to get a job in Chennai, is a bit baffled as he is thrown into a new place and has to utilize his time to get familiar with Ananya's parents and make them like him. His life in Chennai stands in stark contrast to his typical Punjabi lifestyle.

Krish not only refers to Tamil snacks as 'spirals', but also mocks the funeral-like silence they observe while having their meals.

Krish, who leaves no stone unturned in convincing his girlfriend Ananya's parents, succeeds in convincing them by helping Ananya family. Besides helping Ananya's father to complete his first PowerPoint Presentation, he tutors her brother Manju, and also manages to encourage her mom by asking her to sing in a concert organised by his office.

Ananya's mother is convinced as her dream of singing at a big concert turns into reality. She gets to sing with SP Balasubrahmaniam and Hariharan.

The trial begins when they have to convince Krish's mother. Things gets complex as the relatives of Krish's mother's don't approve of the marriage. They say that Krish should not marry Ananya but agree with them when Ananya helps one of Krish's cousin to get married.

While half the battle is won by earning their parents approval, the next formidable task arises when they make their parents meet each other.

On their trip to Goa, Ananya and Krish realize the dream of them getting married is broken as Ananya's parents grow suspicious of Krish's mom and him. And Ananya's family decide that Krish and Ananya will not marry each other.

At last, Krish's father, who was initially not fond of him, helps Krish and Ananya to get married as he convinces Ananya's family and finally succeed. The novel ends with Ananya giving birth to twin boys.
