TIRUCHY: As the car came to a screeching halt, Sujatha refused to alight from the vehicle apparently taken aback by the huge crowd of family members and friends waiting outside her house.Sujatha, wife of Manimaran, the chairman of Builders Association of Tiruchy who died in the Nepal plane crash, had rushed back here from Mayiladuthurai after hearing about the shocking news. But when she finally stepped out of the car, her daughter sprang out of the house to embrace her mom. It was a heartwrenching scene as friends and family members tried to console them. Sources close to the family said that Manimaran’s mother fainted as soon as she heard of the news. Friends remember Manimaran as a nice human being who cared to stop his car, step out and wish people. He was also someone who would hardly flare up under any circumstance and was always seen smiling. The same was the case at the residence of Marudachalam, a renowned builder, who died in the crash. A pall of gloom descended on the entire street. K Sukumar, the president, Civil Engineering Association of Tiruchy, defines Marudachalam to be “a gem among human beings”. Marudachalam’s wife Kausalya was reported to be at her son Anand’s residence at Anna Nagar while their daughter, Anitha is settled in Singapore. Similar situations were witnessed at the houses of other victims as well. Family and friends were in deep state of disbelief and anguish.P Kumar, Member of Parliament, N Sivapathy, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, R Manoharan, MLA and M Paranjothi, Ex-MLA, visited the houses of the victims and offered their condolences. Briefing the media later, Kumar and Sivapathy informed that as per the directive of Chief Minister J Jayalaitha, the team went to personally offer their condolences. They also said that all arrangements were made to bring the bodies to Tiruchy. A team of 10 members that includes eight from the victims’ family and Kumar, would leave from New Delhi to Kathmandu by a 1.45 pm Kingfisher Airways flight.Earlier in the day, DMK leader and Rajya Sabha floor leader N Siva came to the rescue of victims’ families by contacting the Indian Embassy in Nepal to get details of the mishap.
