BANGALORE: The High Court on Monday asked the Chief Secretary, who was present in the court, why the Advocate General’s (AG) office was not streamlined even after 50 years and observed, “We have to either close the Advocate General’s office or the High Court.” The division bench consisting of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice H G Ramesh asked, “Tell us what we should do and we will do whatever you tell. Neither the Assistant Advocate General nor the officials were present when the case came up for hearing. Tell us how this court will function? The Advocate General’s office has not been streamlined from the past 50 years and if someone comes to know that this sort of things are happening in Bangalore, it will be ridiculous and how will we feel? If we can’t close down the Advocate General’s office, we will close the High Court. Why should we close the High Court?” The division bench adjourned the case for further hearing to June 27 after the Chief Secretary and other officials requested the court to grant the government some more time.Sangamitra Foundation had filed a writ petition challenging Union Government’s decision to withdraw permission given to construct a 712 feet tall Lord Buddha’s statue in Gopalapuram village of Ramanagaram district and the single judge had allowed the writ petition. The State Government had filed an appeal against the single judge’s order. When the case came up for hearing at around 11.00 am, the government advocate submitted that the Assistant Advocate General would argue the case and the files related to the case are with him.The division bench directed that the case be posted for hearing again at 2.30 pm and when the case came up for hearing again, both the Assistant Advocate General and the officials were not present in the hall.
