Houses of two touts, who were said to have played a major role in the misappropriation of scholarship funds for the children of those working in scavenging, tanning, were raided by police on Saturday.
A team led by DSP P Annamalai swooped down on the house of Palanisamy, one of the two touts, at Singalanthapuram near Belukurichy. The house of other accused, Mani, at Vellakalpatti in Namagiripet, was searched.
Puduchatram police named both men as accused in a case relating to the scholarship scam. Sources said that Saravanan, a school teacher recently arrested in connection with the case, confessed that the two touts were involved in the collection of the list of applicants and got the scholarship sanctioned. Palanisamy was said to have maintained contacts with officials of the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department.
He apparently colluded with these officials and the school headmasters to swindle money. As of Sunday, HMs of 75 schools, including 11 aided, were suspended for involvement in the scam.
