Srinagar: Abu Dujana, the slain Lashkar terrorist, had managed to give security forces the slip at least 5 times in the recent months. But on Tuesday, the lady luck ran out.
Sources in Jammu and Kashmir Police say that specific input was received, as per which, Dujana was visiting the house of one Khurshid, frequently.
Close vigil and investigation revealed that Khurshid's daughter Rukaiya was married to Dujana. Around the same time, local inputs said that Dujana was visiting the house of his rumoured girlfriend Shazia.
"He was very active on the Pulwama-Pompore highway stretch. But in the last 3 months, violence had come down in this area. In these three months, Dujana's visits to Khurshid and Shazia's houses had increased. Looks like he wanted to focus on family," a police officer told CNN-News18.
J&K police claim a tip-off was given on Tuesday that Abu Dujana and his aide Arif were visiting Hakripora House of Khurshid in the Pulwama district. A joint operation, with Army, CRPF and police, was launched and by 4 am the premises was gheraoed.
"We asked the civilians to come out after laying a cordon. Abu Dujana and Arif were believed to be on the first floor of this house. The first fire came at around 7:50 am, and then the encounter began," DG CRPF R R Bhatnagar told CNN-News18.
CRPF said that the gun battle went on till 9:30 a.m when the house was blasted. Two hours later, the partially charred bodies from the half burnt house were recovered and identified as those of Dujana and Arif.
"Women have been a weakness for the Lashkar terrorists," a police officer said.
"Burhan Wani's location was shared by his ex-girlfriend. Abdullah Uni, another terrorist, got killed in Sopore in 2012-13 after a tip-off from a woman. Abu Talla, an LeT terrorist, was gunned down in Shivpora on a similar tip-off," the officer added.
Core commander of 15 core Sandhu in a press conference said, "ye apni ayyashi ki wajah se maara Gaya (He died because of his extravagance)."
Dujana's aide Arif Dar, who was killed in the same encounter, was wanted in connection with bank robbery, looting of arms and murder of a PDP district president Abdul Ghani Dar alias Wakil.
Abu Dujana, a Pakistani terrorist, allegedly infiltrated into India territory from Pakistan in 2014 and is believed to be the mastermind of the attack on EDI in Pampore in 2016, and the Udhampur army camp attack the same year.
He had given security forces the slip multiple times, including in May this year when stone pelting by civilians helped him escape. Stone pelting began during his encounter on Tuesday, too, forcing forces to blast the house off so that no escape route was available to trapped terrorists.
