Humble Beginnings To Master Mechanic, Anita Sri's Journey Is An Inspiration For Women

Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year, a day dedicated to celebrating women and their achievements. In today’s era, women and men are given equal opportunities to prove themselves in various fields. One such inspiring story is that of Anita Sri, who chose to become a mechanic to support her family.

Anita works at the Siva Sakthi Mechanic Shop, owned by her brother, where she has become a popular figure among motorists as the only female mechanic. During an exclusive interview with the News18 team, Anita shared insights into her job and what motivated her to pursue this unconventional career path.

Born in Pudukkottai, Gandhinagar, Tamil Nadu, Anita is one of nine siblings, with five brothers and three sisters. Coming from a family of labourers, Anita witnessed her parents working tirelessly to sustain the family. As her sisters got married and her brothers eventually left home, Anita remained unmarried and took on the responsibility of caring for her sick parents for fifteen years.

Despite only completing her education up to the 10th standard, Anita embarked on a journey of diverse employment opportunities. From working in textile shops to agricultural labour, from household chores to masonry and even priestly duties, Anita gained varied experiences.

Remarkably, Anita possesses skills beyond mechanics; she can adeptly ride bicycles, motorcycles, cars and other vehicles. Ten years ago, she purchased her own TVS 50 motorbike, which she proudly owns and maintains.

Anita’s decision to become a mechanic stemmed from her brother’s request for assistance. Over the past three years, she has honed her expertise in repairing two-wheeler vehicles, initially learning the trade from her brother. Today, Anita excels in tasks such as clutch and plug replacement, carburettor maintenance, oil changes and more.

Reflecting on her journey, Anita acknowledges her humble beginnings and the challenges she has overcome to establish herself in a male-dominated profession. Her dedication, perseverance and commitment to her family’s well-being serve as a testament to the strength and resilience of women in society.
