Moscow: Twenty-five people in a Siberian region have died after drinking a poisonous alcohol substitute.
The police have arrested four people suspected of running an illicit distillery that may have made the deadly substance, the Interfax news agency reported on Tuesday.
Citing a spokesman for the prosecutor's office in the northeastern Russian region of Magadan, Interfax reported that at least 30 people were poisoned by an alcohol substitute in the past week or so and that 25 of them had died.
Four women in the Magadan region were found with 1,200 liters of liquid containing alcohol and were arrested on charges of the illegal production and sale of alcohol products, Interfax reported.
Officials say thousands of people die in Russia every year from drinking poisonous homemade or illegally produced alcohol or fake alcohol.
Fake vodka is often made from wood alcohol that is meant for industrial purposes.
