BANGALORE: JD(S) general secretary Y S V Datta has expressed doubt over the identity of the farmers of Mundargi who called on Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and offered their land for the proposed Posco steel plant.
"It seems that the show of farmers pleading before the chief minister to take over the land is stagemanaged. I doubt whether all those who had come to the Yeddyurappa's home office are the real land holders, because a random check of the farmers conducted by us revealed that the majority of them were unaware of the purpose of their visit to the CM," Datta told Express here on Friday.Elaborating on his suspicions of the identity of the farmers, Datta said hundreds of farmers had assembled at the meeting of former CM H D Kumaraswamy at Mundargi and other villages where they stated that they do not part with their land.

"Therefore, how can there be hundreds of farmers offering their land? We have collected the video footage as well as a few photos of the farmers waiting at the chief minister's home office. We will send these photographs to our party workers in Gadag and Mundargi and verify whether they are really farmers whose lands are earmarked for acquisition," Datta elucidated.

Claiming that the state government's decision to cancel the Posco steel project in Gadag was due to the sustained struggle of the farmers led by the JD(S), Datta stated that similar platforms will be created in other districts, wherever the government plans to acquire fertile lands.
