Assam is famous for cultivating one of the hottest peppers, Bhut Jolokia. It is also known as Ghost Pepper. In the Assamese language, the pepper is referred to as Bih Zolokia, meaning poison chilli. The poison denotes the heat of the plant. It is native to Assam and the northeast region of India and is also grown in Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur to name a few states. Bhut Jolokia is one of the hottest chillies, which is used extensively in cooking and home remedies. This particular plant has now witnessed a green revolution under a young entrepreneur in Tinsukia, Assam. Bhaijan Bailung is a young entrepreneur and farmer, who has initiated agricultural activities in Tinsukia. He has been cultivating the Bhut Jolokia on 8 bigha land and has become a self-sufficient farmer. He often grabs the headlines for his cultivation of paddy crops and Kathphool, a kind of mushroom. With his huge land and cultivation of hot pepper plants, he has been able to offer employment to about 20 families. He has earned quite the fame and recognition in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh.
Recently, under Bhaijan Bailung’s leadership, various agricultural activities have been taking place in Tinsukia. In the Govindpur area, he has cultivated plants in an 8 bigha fallow land. He along with other farmers planted hot peppers in neat rows. Now, these plants have begun to ripen and he has been selling them to various parts of the two districts.
The cultivation of Bhut Jolokia has led to him and other farmers earning lakhs and has been able to offer employment to many. By growing various crops, he has become self-sufficient every year and has now set an example in the district by hiring the unemployed folks of Govindpur in Tinsukia district. The farmers are delighted with the yield.
While the production has increased, the farmers are unable to get appropriate prices for their harvest. In an interview with Local18, Bhaijan Bailung requested government intervention to take necessary measures to properly store the hot peppers and ensure that they get a fair value.
