Chicago: A 32-year-old Indian-origin woman, who was reported missing from Maine Township near Chicago since January, has been found dead, according to police officials, who suspect it to be a case of suicide.
The body of Sangitagen Patel was recovered from the Des Plaines River on Sunday, Cook County Sheriff's Office spokesman Steve Patterson said on Tuesday.
Patterson said there were no signs of foul play and an autopsy by the Cook County Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was drowning.
The Cook County Forest Preserve Police had recovered a body from the Des Plaines river Sunday afternoon after a couple kayaking in the water spotted the body caught in river debris about a quarter-mile south of Milwaukee Avenue.
The identification of Patel was initially aided by the recovery of personal property, including jewellery, at the scene and on Tuesday her family positively identified her body.
"After interviewing those who knew Patel, police investigators determined her actions in the days before her disappearance suggested the potential for suicide," Patterson said.
Patel was last seen on January 2 as she left for her job at a Subway restaurant in Wheeling. She was dressed in her black uniform pants and purple jacket and was "purportedly walking towards the bus stop to go to work," police had said.
Seeking information on Patel after she went missing in January, the police had said there was no history of domestic trouble between Patel and her husband nor did she have a history of leaving without contacting her husband.
